Expertise

Whilst experienced in all aspects of civil litigation and human rights, Darren has developed particular expertise in private law actions against the police including claims for false imprisonment, assault, malicious prosecution and under the Equality Act. Over a number of years Darren has brought a large number of cases against the police and other public bodies for race discrimination.

He has a strong interest in the often difficult area of policing public order, and in particular the policing of football supporters, for whom he regularly acts against police forces across the country. A committed football supporter himself, he is appalled at the way the police disregard the liberties of football supporters when policing matches and works with clients to challenge this, using both public and private law proceedings. He receives regular referrals from the Football Supporters Federation.

Darren is also experienced in bringing judicial review proceedings against the police in relation to enhanced disclosure decisions, a growing area of concern given the devastating impact upon a person’s career that can be caused by the disclosure of often old and unproven allegations. Darren recently settled a claim for a five figure sum for a care worker who lost his job after the police released information about a false allegation made against him.

Darren also acts for victims of crime both in challenging, via judicial review, decisions of the Crown Prosecution Service not to prosecute and in seeking compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). In these days of stringent public spending cuts, the CICA will often refuse victims compensation on the most tenuous grounds and Darren has conducted many successful appeals against CICA decisions not to pay compensation. Darren has also
conducted many judicial reviews of CICA appeal tribunal decisions.

Darren is also experienced in dealing with police complaints and has brought a number of successful judicial review challenges against the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) when the Commission has refused to uphold valid complaints.
